Body Brokers is a 2021 movie set to release in February. While the crime thriller may just be an entertaining story line to some – it’s actually based on real-life events that occurred inside of some drug and alcohol rehabilitation centers across the country.
The gist of it is this – rehab facilities who participated in this highly unethical and illegal act would pay their clients to recruit drug addicts to come to their facility. On the surface, that doesn’t sound too bad. The problem is – they didn’t actually treat these people for their addiction. They’d simply allow them to continue their drug use on the rehab facility property while collecting insurance money to pay for their “treatment”.
Eventually, this activity caught up to most of the participants in this body broker scheme. Unfortunately, though, when insurance money is at play, there’s likely to still be some dishonesty somewhere.
Body Brokers covers an important topic that many are likely unaware of – it’s important to be educated, especially when it comes to your health and your life.
When researching a drug or alcohol treatment facility for yourself or a loved one, here are some things to keep in mind.
1. Never Accept Money to Go to Treatment
Starting with the most obvious based on our description of Body Brokers above, a reputable treatment facility will never offer you money or other perks to attend their rehab facility. While this can be extremely tempting, this is not an offer that will come from a place that will help you on your road to sobriety.
2. Be Very Careful About Out-of-State Treatment Facilities
There’s nothing inherently wrong about seeking treatment out of state. That is – if it’s a legitimate treatment facility.
Here in Fort Wayne, we see a lot of California or Florida based treatment centers advertising to addicts in Northeast Indiana. They’ll advertise with a fictitious local address and phone number, giving you the impression they are locally based in or near Fort Wayne, when in fact they are thousands of miles away.
When you call, they’ll pretend like they are local but tell you that they are at capacity so you must fly out to them where they have open beds.
Again, while a trip to California for treatment might sound more tempting than Fort Wayne, especially in the winter time, people often arrive finding that they don’t in fact have beds available leaving them stranded, or find that the level of care is subpar because the treatment facility is really just looking to onboard as many people as possible to get them on their insurance payroll, but minimize the actual level of care provided.
3. Do Your Due Diligence to Find Their Physical Location – Not Just What it Says Online
Fort Wayne Recovery is located right here in Fort Wayne at 301 E Dupont Rd.
Our ownership is local, our staff is local, we leverage local resources and we’re extremely involved in the community. You can drive by or stop in to our facility. You can find us regularly on WANE 15’s Medical Minute, and you’ll often see us at local events.
This commitment to the community is why Fort Wayne Recovery started in the first place. We’re personally invested in the people who work and live in our same community. And this is the level of care you need to truly break through to the other side and find permanent sobriety.
4. Check Reviews and Verify Their Authenticity
What’s obvious is that online reviews are a great way to learn the truth about a treatment facility.
What might be less obvious is how easily this can be manipulated.
The qualities of authentic online reviews include:
- More than just a small handful of reviews
- Generally, not a perfect 5-star score
- Spaced out over time – a big chunk over the course of a few days followed by a period of inactivity is a red flag
- The sound authentic – reviews written by the business often contain overly-detailed information and uncommon language
We hope that you have found this information to be helpful. Your life, your health and your sobriety mean everything. Taking that difficult step to finally reach out for help takes a lot of courage.
And our hope is that, when you do, you’ll reach out to a treatment facility that is able and willing to help you just as much as you want the help.
