Children often need assistance in order to express how they feel in a healthy way, otherwise they are at a much greater risk for having behavioral and/or emotional difficulties. The American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry identifies several concerns minors exhibit when they are exposed to addiction at home. For instance, difficulties at home can contribute to academic declines, rule breaking, high risk behaviors, and/or isolation from support. The disease of addiction may manifest differently depending on the type of relationship. Guilt, shame, and mistrust are just some of the negative influences of addiction on marriages. Spouses tend to take on the role of a caretaker for the addict and feel responsible for their loved one’s recovery. The shift in roles can turn into resentment, further damaging the relationship. According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration, recovery services combined with family therapy enhances the relationship, while improving communication and problem solving.
